“Falling Into Grace is a dazzling, clear, profound book—a cool drink of water for thirsty hearts everywhere."
Geneen Roth, author of Women, Food, God

“The path to enlightenment today is cluttered with concepts:  Adyashanti cuts through them with a sword so merciless and tender that only space remains.”
Meg Lundstrom, author of What to Do When You Can’t Decide

“Adyashanti’s teachings point us toward what we most yearn for:  realizing and embodying the love and awareness that is our natural state.  Falling Into Grace is wonderfully lucid, simple, and powerful.  It will remind you to stop the struggle and to relax back into what you already are.”
—Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance

Adyashanti asks us to let go of our struggles with life and open to the full promise of mindfulness and spiritual awakening:  the end of delusion and the discovery of our essential being.  In his many years as a spiritual teacher, Adyashanti has found the simpler the teaching, the greater its power to initiate this awakening.  In Falling intoGrace, he shares what he considers fundamental insights that will spark a revolution in the way we perceive life—through a progressive inquiry exploring the concept of a separate self and the choice to stop believing the thoughts that perpetuate suffering; “taking the backward step” into the pure potential of the present moment; why mindfulness and spiritual awakening can be a disturbing process; absolute union with every part of our experience and true autonomy—the unique expression of our own sense of freedom.

Excerpt:

When I was a young child, about seven or eight years old, one of the things I started to notice and ponder as I watched the adults around me was that the adult world is prone to suffering, pain, and conflict.  Even though I grew up in a relatively healthy household with loving parents and two sisters, I still saw a great deal of pain around me.  As I looked at the adult world, I wondered:  How is it that people come into conflict?

As a child, I also happened to be a great listener—some may even say an eavesdropper.  I would listen to every conversation that went on in the house.  In fact, it was a family joke that nothing happened in the house without me knowing about it.  I liked to know everything  that was going on around me, and so I spent a lot of my childhood listening to the conversation of adults, in my home and in the homes of relatives.  Much of the time, I found what they talked about to be quite interesting, but I also noticed a certain ebb and flow to most of their discussions—how conversations moved into a little bit of conflict, then back away from it.

"One of the best explanations of mindfulness I have ever come across."
Janice Long (Amazon review)

A Feast for the Spirit I began reading Adyashanti's "Falling into Grace" with a soup spoon, taking big gulps, hardly chewing. Before too many pages went by, I switched to a tea spoon and went back almost to the beginning and took smaller bites and chewed Adya's words more slowly, allowing the nutrients he obviously placed with care to emerge with each bite. "What would happen if we were fully able to be with what is?" "Conflict isn't inherent in existence. Existence is just the way it is..." "As we begin to meet life as it is rather than as we think it should be, as we let go of our need to control and continuously interpret our experience, we start to open to life in a completely new way..." Two-thirds of the way through, I switched to chop sticks and as I saw the end looming, I'd grasp each underlined sentence and chew it until I was sure I'd gotten out of them what the author intended. Toward the end of the book, I was picking my way through with one of those tiny hors d' oeuvres forks. I literally wanted to read each paragraph twice before going on to the next. Amazing book!Every page is diamond like This is one of the clearest, most pithy introductions to the Perennial Wisdom I have come across in many years. It is one of the best contemporary restatements of the Buddha's Four Noble Truths I've had the good fortune to discover. I can't recommend this book more highly. Even after more than 50 years of study and practice, I found new insights in inspiration throughout the book. If you are a seeker do yourself a favor and read this amazing book. It can be especially helpful to people in recovery who, like myself, don't relate to the Judeo-Christian notion of a God or even Higher Power.Phillip Z. Author of A Skeptic's Guide to the 12 Steps.Transformative I listened to the audio version of this book before reading the actual text. Adyashanti speaks freely from a profound depth that resonates with his every word.He covers a vast range of perspectives that all point to the same awakening. As with many of his talks, though he repeats himself often, I would find it challenging to outline his points and quote what he said. This is to say that the experience of reading the book transcends the content itself. One is immediately transported to the living of it rather than the theory of freedom, his words constitute the path/technique/meditation in the moment. He manages to make clear and simple what cannot be made clear and simple. Moving through words to that which cannot be described with words.I experienced FALLING INTO GRACE as a meditation in and of itself.I recommend this book to readers with an open heart, whether they’re on a spiritual path or not.

The Coddling of the American Mind Download

ISBN: B079P7PDWB
Title: The Coddling of the American Mind Pdf How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure

A timely investigation into the new "safety culture" on campus and the dangers it poses to free speech, mental health, education, and ultimately democracy

The generation now coming of age has been taught three Great Untruths: their feelings are always right; they should avoid pain and discomfort; and they should look for faults in others and not themselves. These three Great Untruths are part of a larger philosophy that sees young people as fragile creatures who must be protected and supervised by adults. But despite the good intentions of the adults who impart them, the Great Untruths are harming kids by teaching them the opposite of ancient wisdom and the opposite of modern psychological findings on grit, growth, and antifragility.

The result is rising rates of depression and anxiety, along with endless stories of college campuses torn apart by moralistic divisions and mutual recriminations.

This is a book about how we got here. First Amendment expert Greg Lukianoff and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt take us on a tour of the social trends stretching back to the 1980s that have produced the confusion and conflict on campus today, including the loss of unsupervised play time and the birth of social media, all during a time of rising political polarization.

This is a book about how to fix the mess. The culture of "safety" and its intolerance of opposing viewpoints has left many young people anxious and unprepared for adult life, with devastating consequences for them, for their parents, for the companies that will soon hire them, and for a democracy that is already pushed to the brink of violence over its growing political divisions. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity.

This is a book for anyone who is confused by what's happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.

Brilliant Synthesis of Systemic Issues - Required Reading for Parents & Educators Lukianoff and Haidt have greatly expanded their popular Sept 2015 Atlantic article into a more detailed and nuanced book of the same title. Haidt is a social psychologist and Lukianoff is a First Amendment Lawyer - a perfect pairing for this project. Haidt is also author of the highly relevant and absolutely brilliant 2012 book, "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion." A major reference and parallel running throughout the book is Nassim Taleb's seminal book, "Antifragile: Things that Gain from Disorder."Key Coddling conclusion: Parents and educators are unwittingly, and paradoxically, harming today's students by trying so hard to protect them. This is from perceived physical dangers as well as from ideas that might prove uncomfortable. The net is that "helicopter" parenting and increasingly ideologically uniform college campuses aren't allowing children to develop natural resilience (identical in concept to children being susceptible to diseases if not properly immunized). Kids are not receiving the proper stress-testing to the issues they will undoubtedly encounter in the real world and "the growing tendency to cultivate vulnerabilities in students carries unacknowledged costs" (Erika Christakis). An important and highly unsettling second derivative of the cited trends are the "consequences for the future of liberal democracies." The book references "the coarsening of social interaction," and desire to "invoke coercion by other parties to solve problems" as one of the "vulnerabilities of democracies." A wonderful speech excerpt from Chief Justice John Roberts highlights his grasp of the importance of antifragility and ability to "see the message in your misfortunes." Parents need to let children fall, fail and skin their knees more, while colleges need to make sure students are exposed to diverse ideologies and ideas that make them uncomfortable. In the end, "safe spaces" are anything but. There is a great chapter on "The Bureaucracy of Safetyism" that opens with a prescient Alexis de Tocqueville quote from Democracy in America: "The Sovereign power [or soft despot] extends its arms over the entire society; it covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated, minute and uniform rules...it does not tyrannize, it hinders, it represses, it enervates, it extinguishes, it stupefies, and finally it reduces each nation to being nothing more than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd." Safety, conformity and resume wars breed "Excellent Sheep."Lastly, Haidt and Lukianoff's chapter "The Quest for Justice" demonstrates their ability to parse polarizing issues, like "social justice," and disaggregate them into the component parts. In this instance, the important distinction between "distributive justice" (the perception that people are getting what is deserved) and "procedural justice" (the perception that the process by which things are distributed and rules are enforced is fair and trustworthy).Do your brain a favor - buy The Righteous Mind, Antifragile and Coddling and then steal away for a weekend to read them all.

“A masterpiece of translation.” - Rowan Williams, University of Cambridge“A revelation. Never have I been so aware at once of the beauty of the poetry, the physicality of Homer’s world, and the moral ambiguity of those who inhabit it.” - Susan Chira, New York Times Book Review“Emily Wilson’s crisp and musical version is a cultural landmark.… This translation will change the way the poem is read in English.” - Charlotte Higgins, Guardian“In the history of Odyssey translations, few have exerted such a cultural influence that they become ‘classics’ in their own right.… I predict that Emily Wilson will win a place in this roll-call of the most significant translations of the poem in history. She certainly deserves the honour.” - Edith Hall, Daily Telegraph“Emily Wilson has given us a staggeringly superior translation―true, poetic, lively and readable, and always closely engaged with the original Greek―that brings to life the fascinating variety of voices in Homer’s great epic.” - Richard F. Thomas, Harvard University“When I first read these lines…, I was floored. I’d never read an Odyssey that sounded like this. It had such directness, the lines feeling not as if they were being fed into iambic pentameter because of some strategic decision but because the meter was a natural mode for its speaker.” - Wyatt Mason, New York Times Magazine“In her powerful new translation, Emily Wilson… has chosen immediacy and naturalism over majestic formality. She preserves the musicality of Homer’s poetry, opting for an iambic pentameter whose approachable storytelling tone invites us in, only to startle us with eruptions of beauty.… Wilson’s transformation of such a familiar and foundational work is… astonishing.” - Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, Atlantic“Wilson’s translation is a superb achievement and a striking departure from the tradition of Homeric translation into English.… There is no elaborate or antiquated diction, just a crispness and clear-headedness that will seem quite alien to anyone familiar with earlier versions.… Wilson has produced a wonderfully distinctive―and modern―version of the poem.” - Henry Power, Evening Standard“Irresistibly readable, Wilson’s Odyssey turns Homeric epic into a poetic feast.” - Froma Zeitlin, Princeton University“This translation is a marvel! Bold and timely and ever so exciting.… As majestic as literature gets.” - Max Porter, author of Grief Is the Thing With Feathers Emily Wilson is a professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Philadelphia.

A New York Times Notable Book of 2018

"Wilson’s language is fresh, unpretentious and lean…It is rare to find a translation that is at once so effortlessly easy to read and so rigorously considered." ―Madeline Miller, author of Circe

Composed at the rosy-fingered dawn of world literature almost three millennia ago, The Odyssey is a poem about violence and the aftermath of war; about wealth, poverty and power; about marriage and family; about travelers, hospitality, and the yearning for home.

This fresh, authoritative translation captures the beauty of this ancient poem as well as the drama of its narrative. Its characters are unforgettable, none more so than the “complicated” hero himself, a man of many disguises, many tricks, and many moods, who emerges in this version as a more fully rounded human being than ever before.

Written in iambic pentameter verse and a vivid, contemporary idiom, Emily Wilson’s Odyssey sings with a voice that echoes Homer’s music; matching the number of lines in the Greek original, the poem sails along at Homer’s swift, smooth pace.

A fascinating, informative introduction explores the Bronze Age milieu that produced the epic, the poem’s major themes, the controversies about its origins, and the unparalleled scope of its impact and influence. Maps drawn especially for this volume, a pronunciation glossary, and extensive notes and summaries of each book make this is an Odyssey that will be treasured by a new generation of readers.

Thrilling and poetic Emily Wilson's new translation of Homer's Odyssey is extraordinary in so many ways. Among its many attributes is clear, and finely-tuned language set in iambic pentameter that puts the poetry back in one of the Western cannon's greatest poems. Readers need not wade through purple and overblown blank verse, twice the length of the original text to finally arrive, with Odysseus in Ithaca. His story and character, as well as those of Penelope and Telemachus are fashioned in direct, active language that lets the hero's deeds and trials, as well as those of his wife and son, impress or disappoint the reader. Reading Wilson's version was like reading The Odyssey for the first time. There has been much fuss about her choice of a few words--"complicated, canapes, tote". Those complaining can't possibly have read the work or at least not her introduction where she explains quite convincingly the choices she made and purpose in providing yet another interpretation.Wilson is equally fearless in wading into the politics of translation arguing it is chauvinism to translate the slave women/concubines as "maids or servants". More than inaccurate it distorts the unpleasant truth about Greek civilization: it was a culture sustained by slave labor (as were nearly all others at the time). She ratchets things up another notch when she takes on Robert Fagles translation of the slave girls as "sluts" and "whores" who deserve to be slain. Why she wonders if they had no agency in life can they be responsible for the deeds of men who are at best coercing sex, at worst raping them? Wilson says flat out his attitude and translation are misogynistic. She also makes convincing arguments in her introduction that Penelope is more dimensional than credited and Helen of Troy refreshingly free of guilt for deeds committed in her name. The introduction, translator's notes, maps and glossary all enhance the reader's enjoyment, making it a truly epic experience. The result is a perfect blend between an Odyssey for today's reader and a ... I have read and taught the Odyssey at least five times over the past twenty years. And Emily Wilson's version is a godsend. It is, by far, the most readable version out there. It never strains to be "epic" the way so many translations do. Instead, she uses today's English while also hewing faithfully to the unrhymed iambic pentameter that Shakespeare, Milton, and Wordsworth established as the epic form in English poetry. The result is a perfect blend between an Odyssey for today's reader and a "poetic" narrative. I read it all in three sittings because I couldn't put it down. Who would have thought someone could turn the Odyssey into a page turner? I can't wait to try out this new translation on my students. Hats off to Emily Wilson!
