From number one New York Times best-selling author, legendary storyteller, and master of short fiction Stephen King comes an extraordinary collection of four new and compelling novellas - Mr. Harrigan's Phone, The Life of Chuck, Rat, and the title story If It Bleeds - each pulling you into intriguing and frightening places. The novella is a form King has returned to over and over again in the course of his amazing career, and many have been made into iconic films, including The Body (Stand by Me) and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (Shawshank Redemption). Like Four Past Midnight, Different Seasons, and most recently Full Dark, No Stars, If It Bleeds is a uniquely satisfying collection of longer short fiction by an incomparably gifted writer.

Forces In The World That Move Us Stephen King has done it again. This is a great book for our times. During this Covid19 pandemic we need something to take us away, to re-learn to laugh, to have a good time, and to face our demons. Detective Holly Gibney is my favorite Stephen King characters. She is that rare breed, a totally likable person, who gets into horrific messes. As a King fan, I am not into the sci-fi up yonder dudes. In Stephen Kings new book, If It Bleeds, we have 4 novellas. A novella is a very short book, or a very long short story. Mr Harrigan s Phone is a fun theme about the technological field. It tells the story of a boy Craig and Mr John Harrington. Craig did odd jobs for Mr Harrington, and Mr Harrington liked having him around. Craig received lottery cards from Mr Harrington, and won Some cash. In return he gave Mr Harrington an iPhone, and we see the results. The Life of Chuck is written in 3 acts, and tells the story of Chuck in reverse. It is funny at times, and will keep us entertained. Rat is the dark side of the novellas. It centers on a writer, Drew Larson who can t seem to finish a novel, and then the troubles really begin. The fourth novellaIs If It Bleeds. This is my favorite novella, featuring Detective Holly Gibney, and she is tracking down a monster that few believe she can tackle.Stephen King rarely disappoints, and this book hits the spot for me. It is silly to say he is a great writer because we all agree. His way with words, the characters he conjures in his imagination, the use of novellas to fulfill his needs as a writer gives us the penultimate read.Recommended. prisrob 04-22-2020Four solid tales from America's storyteller First, I should explain that I ordered this in OCTOBER 2019, but Amazon's out of stock, and never shipped it. So I had to drive to K-Mart to buy a copy. Makes me wonder what's the point in advance-ordering a book from Amazon and they don't order enough to fill orders. Are they filling them in the order in which they receive them? Since this was an advance order, it seems to me that they should know exactly how many books to order, but apparently not: I'll be going to the local Kmart to get books I need. That said, these are four solid stories. King's a consummate storyteller, and each is an entirely different kind of story. There's something for everyone, and these shorter stories (novellas, actually) take up far less time than one of his long novels, which are a major investment in time.Longtime King fans will appreciate the reappearance of Holly Gibney, one of King's most interesting characters. She was in the Bill Hodges trilogy, and OUTSIDER, and now this collection. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of her.from: All Things Serve the BeamDid not want this. I accidentally ordered this and I can not seem to cancel it ?

The Man in the Red Coat Pdf

ISBN: B07TZY86ZJ
Title: The Man in the Red Coat Pdf

From the Man Booker Prize-winning author of The Sense of an Ending—a rich, witty, revelatory tour of Belle Époque Paris, via the remarkable life story of the pioneering surgeon, Samuel Pozzi. In the summer of 1885, three Frenchmen arrived in London for a few days' intellectual shopping: a prince, a count, and a commoner with an Italian name. In time, each of these men would achieve a certain level of renown, but who were they then and what was the significance of their sojourn to England? Answering these questions, Julian Barnes unfurls the stories of their lives which play out against the backdrop of the Belle Époque in Paris. Our guide through this world is Samuel Pozzi, the society doctor, free-thinker and man of science with a famously complicated private life who was the subject of one of John Singer Sargent's greatest portraits. In this vivid tapestry of people (Henry James, Sarah Bernhardt, Oscar Wilde, Proust, James Whistler, among many others), place, and time, we see not merely an epoch of glamour and pleasure, but, surprisingly, one of violence, prejudice, and nativism—with more parallels to our own age than we might imagine. The Man in the Red Coat is, at once, a fresh portrait of the Belle Époque; an illuminating look at the longstanding exchange of ideas between Britain and France; and a life of a man who lived passionately in the moment but whose ideas and achievements were far ahead of his time.

Typical Barnes brilliance A really original look at the so-called Belle Epoque through the lives of three men.The book itself is beautifully produced on high quality paper with outstanding illustrations.I cannot recommend this too highly.well.... So, this is...OK. The (named) subject is interesting and, at least the gynecological stuff, unusual. But the book reads like Barnes dictated this freestyle and nobody edited it and he didn't think about the shape or narrative. It's riffing. And while the stuff about Pozzi is new (to me), its padded with all the usual stuff about belle époque Paris ... Dreyfus, Wilde, etc. As a magazine piece, fine. Not a real book. And Barnes is very much the....law-giver. His judgements are wild, unsubstantiated, and highly dubious. I don't mean about politics. I mean when he "gets inside" the head of Pozzi's daughter, for example. It just doesn't convince.....This is a fair example of a common type of litterateur book .... a cute idea, hinged on one unusual person or event...but ultimately a rehash of what we all know. And spoke de haut en bas...yet I feel Barnes wrote this very quickly and gave it no thought. An introduction to Belle Epoch France I have been a long-time admirer of Julian Barnes’ literary works having been introduced to him with his “Flaubert’s Parrot”. Since then I have read all his published works (under the name Julian Barnes) and I am happy to say that this one does not disappoint. In it, he used his encounter with the John Singer Sargent painting of “Dr. Pozzi at home” in which Dr. Pozzi, a noted French Surgeon, is painted as a young man in a scarlet robe, as a metaphor for examining the mores, lives and relationships in belle epoch France. We encounter Montesquieu, Sarah Bernhardt, Oscar Wilde, Huysmans and other prominent arts and literary people of the era.I would not call this book a biography of Pozzi, but it does cover much of what a biography covers.Barnes, an ardent Francophile, also wrote this work as a screed against Brexit as if Brexit will somehow diminish the longstanding love/hate relationship between France and England. I don’t agree with this for an instant, but I never judge a literary work by the author’s politics.I might add that the book is beautifully produced on fine paper with excellent reproductions of belle epoch paintings and an elegant red ribbon bookmark.

Typical. Does not have Canada I don’t know why, but I thought that I would see more in this Atlas.Inaccurate map, also does not provide an overview of states, lacks info about public land I bought this map to provide an overview for road trips, since the internet now provides great detail. However, the landscape is broken up in an illogical way that does not allow you to easily track your travel from state to state. It does exactly what small maps on your phone will do, but not as well. Then I looked at the area around where I live, and was horrified to see that my own, private, land and BLM public land, where people are free to camp, are shown in the same way. Forget the map. Your phone will give you better info.I would rate this no stars if I could. All my earlier maps are correct about public and private land. Not happy with this book The spiral binding is annoying. It cuts the middle of the map pages and ruins the continuity. Many states are cut up into several pages, so it’s hard to use to plan a trip. The pages are big but the print is even tinier than my other atlas. It will be impossible to use as the navigator in road trips. Really disappointed.
