Featuring a beachful of bare-bellied hippos—including one tiny baby who can only say “Bee Bo”—the Belly Button Book is a quirky addition to the phenomenally successful Boynton on Board series. Every page captivates with Sandra Boynton’s inimitable illustrations and joyful rhyming text:

Soon after dark, upon the beach, we sing a hippo song, and if you’re feeling in the mood, we hope you’ll sing along: “Belly Belly Button, you’re oh so fine. Ooo, Belly Button, I’m so happy you’re mine.”

Shiny and sturdy, and featuring a great (navel-shaped, naturally) die-cut cover, the Belly Button Book provides enduring, giggly, read-aloud fun.

Oversized lap edition also available—perfect for more reading aloud!

Cute Book with One Big Flaw I bought this book to add some variety to my three year old son's bedtime book collection. At this point, I am looking for books that aren't too long or too complicated before bedtime and will hold and engage my son's interest, hopefully leading to questions for him so he gets used to exploring the world around him. This book fit that bill. It's a handful of pages long with short and simple rhymes so that Mom or Dad doesn't have to spend a half hour reading before bed. The pages have soft pastel colors and cute drawings of all kinds of dinosaurs. The rhymes are short and sweet--most pages focus on opposites: "Dinosaurs weak. Dinosaurs strong."The only reason I deducted a star is because one of those differences set up a really unfair comparison of looks, which is the opposite of how I'm striving to teach my son to be kind. "Dinosaurs cute, and dinosaurs not" with a picture of some "ugly" warty dinosaurs. Thankfully, my 3 year old said immediately, "Those dinosaurs are cute. I love those dinosaurs." I'm not sensitive about a lot of stuff, but I don't want my son to ever feel bad if he grows up to have looks contrary to the "norm" or to make others feel bad, so avoid or modify that page if that's something you're teaching your kids.PERFECT for the Aspiring young reader! My kids are grown now, but this and Moo, Baa, La La La! were their absolute favorites.Bought this to pass along the fun to a friend's kid who is enjoying being read to, and loves the board books while she is out with her family at various events. The books are well made, heavy duty cardboard.Well printed, Well illustrated.Perfect for the young, aspiring reader! Two of the best Boynton Books with a throw-in for free This set of 3 Boynton books costs about $12 on Amazon, and buying any 2 would cost the same price. You basically get a free book. This particular set includes 2 of my top 4 Boynton books - Barnyard Dance! and Pajama Time! (the other 2 being Happy Hippo, Angry Duck: A Book of Moods (Boynton on Board) and Hippos Go Berserk). Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! is OK, but I won't complain since I basically got it for free!Barnyard Dance! is wonderful. It's the story of an animal square dance with pigs, ducks, cows, chickens, etc. promenading and swinging around the room. It's super-fun to read and has a wonderful rhythm and beat, and I feel like a square dance caller whenever I read it (which it turns out is a very nice feeling to have). I think the fact that it makes me behave silly and enthusiastically makes the book resonate more with my daughter.Pajama Time! is also a good one. I have some trouble figuring out the rhythm (as other reviewers have noted as well), but it's still fun to read and very silly. Basically, this book is a celebration of the pajama and going to bed ritual. It is lost on my 10-month old, but I have a feeling the "Pajammy to the left! Pajammy to the right! P.J." will become an important going-to-bed-mantra in our household when my daughter gets a bit older. I sort of imagine the Menomena song from the Muppets as I read it.I do not think Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! is one of Sandra Boynton's best, in all honesty, but it is fine as a throw in (essentially, it's free with the other two) and kids like dinosaurs so I'm sure it will be appreciated by my daughter when she's a bit older. This was the first Boynton book I ever read and I really didn't get why people like her so much (very basic, "Dinosaurs big, and dinosaurs small" type stuff), but then I read some of her other books and grew a fondness even for this one by association.

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

who bears love for him in spite of herself and will make ... “An Ember in the Ashes,” Sabaa Tahir’s debut novel, depicts a brutal dystopian society where misery weaves its way into the lives of the oppressors and the oppressed. In 500 years of Martial rule, life is precarious for the Scholars and the other groups that are part of the Empire. The academic Scholars were conquered by the militant Martials because of the Martials’ superiority in making weapons of steel. Since then, the Scholars have resisted without success. However, one Scholar, Laia unwillingly becomes entrenched in the underground Resistance when her brother Darin is arrested by the Masks of the Empire, soldiers who are trained to be merciless.Although fearful and doubtful of her own strength, Laia plunges herself into the convoluted world of a naïve spy, just barely surviving as a slave in one life-threatening situation after another with her master, the Commandant. In the beginning of the novel, she states, “I wonder if this real. If it’s a nightmare. It’s real, Laia. Move.” This acceptance of reality is what propels her forward on her journey. Throughout the story, she progressively becomes braver and braver in her quest to save her brother.Literally, on the other side, is Elias, an unwilling mask who wants nothing more than to escape the Empire. Throughout his life, he witnesses the violence of the Empire and abhors it. All he wants is freedom. However, when the Empire’s oracles, the Augurs, thrust a contest upon him to become Emperor, he has to accept because he trusts the cryptic promise of freedom from one of them.Elias and Laia are drawn to each other because of the commonality they share as unwilling participants in the power plays of the Empire and the Resistance. Inevitably, this leads to a problematic romantic attraction between the two. At the same time, Laia has a growing attraction for Keenan, a member of the Resistance. Elias has yet another problematic relationship the form of Helene, who bears love for him in spite of herself and will make unexpected sacrifices in the name of that love.Through Laia and Helene, Tahir delicately interjects the motivation of love in a violent world. Laia’s love for her brother and Helene’s love for Elias propel many of their actions. Both willingly throw themselves in danger for love.Yet, looming in the background is the Commandant, a character who makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok. No real mercy exists in this woman, not even towards her own son. Towards the end of the novel, we learn the regret of her life is the one time she shows mercy. While in many ways a compelling character, the Commandant is really one-note for most of the book whereas many of the other characters evolve.Despite that, Tahir’s novel is gripping and a must-read. The plot pulls you in from the beginning, and you must know what happens.A unique YA fantasy! How in the world did I not come across this series until now, what book abyss have I fallen in that this gem of a writing masterpiece has been hidden from me!?The best kinds of books are the ones that, when you read them, you feel like you’re whisked off to another place, the world around you disappears and for awhile you lose yourself in the stories of these other people. You become part of their adventures, their struggles and triumphs. Yet all the while these people feel like people you know, people you’ve met, or even people you’ve been or might want to be. This book has all of those glorious elements in it! Reading Ember felt like disappearing into a place that’s recognizable and yet so completely foreign, horrible in its brutality and yet strangely beautiful in its mythology. And the characters, excuse me but they are so beyond amazing, words cannot express how much I adore all of them. Laia is the most relatable, her growth from being afraid and defenseless to finding her own kind of courage is remarkable. It’s great when a character doesn’t just instantly toughen up because they’re thrown into something difficult. Laia is strong, but her strength overall is a growing process and that made me admire her as a character. And don’t get me talking about Elias because my heart just might explode from how much I love that poor soul. Seriously his development was stellar and intricate, the way everything was woven together with the Augur Cain and seeing the many layers of himself that needed to revealed for him to be “free”, it was just too much for my heart. Now Helene, that girl is still so much of a mystery to me, but in a great way. I want to know more about her and she’s just awesome with being underestimated by everyone and I felt hurt for her after everything with Elias, but she just had such complexity that I can’t wait to find out more!!Even the side characters in this book were wonderful, like all of Elias and Helene’s Blackcliff friends, I almost cried with what happened to them in the end and Izzi is just the cutest little cupcake after everything that the Commandant has done to her. Who, speaking of, is so the creepiest and worst woman ever. There’s no way I could choose a worst villain of this story, because between Marcus being a super sicko and Keris as the Commandant with her sadistic ways, they were both equally horrid, but in a “I like to dislike you” way.As romance goes, I’m not super thrilled with the love triangle because, let’s be honest here, I’m all for Laia and Elias and so I was saying no to Keenan early on. Plus his character just wasn’t developed as much as Elias so I didn’t feel as interested in the romance between Laia and him as I did with her and Elias. Now I will admit I still wouldn’t be opposed to a triangle between Elias, Laia and Helene. Elias may have been very clueless there for awhile, but I think his affection for Helene was really genuine and I always adore a good friends turned romantic partners pairing. Of course with everything that happened that’s probably not likely. Especially since Elias and Laia have some serious book chemistry. The kind where even when they’re just on the same page together, or even just mention the other’s name, I’m so glued to the page my eyes hurt. The author has managed to capture that all important spark and I just can’t wait for it to ignite into something extraordinary.I’ve already rambled on too much, but I have to mention how well the world was built too. Not just how much I felt immersed in it, like I said above, but just the style of it. Like being plopped down in Ancient Rome, but with a touch of Arabian culture. The mythology of the jinn, efrits, ghuls and other creatures is so intriguing that I’m pulled in by their story as much as the main characters. The author has a talent for weaving stories within stories, within stories and I liked that while the narrative had one overarching goal, Laia saving her brother, there were so many more complex narratives going on underneath. It gave the book more drive, heart and depth. I’m always completely drawn in by the complexity it must take to come up with not just the original plot, but the stories of so many other moving pieces within the original narrative. So after all of that, if you’ve read all the way to the bottom of this review (which if you have, thank you and you’re awesome) I think you can surmise by now that I LOVED this book. The characters, the world, the everything. The writing was so well done that every line and moment fit within the frame of what was happening. Stepping back I normally wouldn’t appreciate something that could be considered slightly violent, but within the world that Tahir has set up, it all works together to create a place that’s haunting and poetically moving at the same time. I can’t wait to start reading the next books in the series, if it’s anything like this one, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing!

Debt - Updated and Expanded Pdf

ISBN: 1612194192
Title: Debt - Updated and Expanded Pdf The First 5,000 Years
Author: David Graeber
Published Date: 2014
Page: 542

Winner of the Bateson Book Prize awarded by the Society for Cultural Anthropology“One of the year’s most influential books. Graeber situates the emergence of credit within the rise of class society, the destruction of societies based on ‘webs of mutual commitment’ and the constantly implied threat of physical violence that lies behind all social relations based on money.” —Paul Mason, THE GUARDIAN  “The book is more readable and entertaining than I can indicate... It is a meditation on debt, tribute, gifts, religion and the false history of money. Graeber is a scholarly researcher, an activist and a public intellectual. His field is the whole history of social and economic transactions.” —Peter Carey, THE OBSERVER"An alternate history of the rise of money and markets, a sprawling, erudite, provocative work."—Drake Bennett, BLOOMBERG BUSINESSWEEK"[A]n engaging book. Part anthropological history and part provocative political argument, it's a useful corrective to what passes for contemporary conversation about debt and the economy."—Jesse Singal, BOSTON GLOBE "Fresh... fascinating... Graeber’s book is not just thought-provoking, but also exceedingly timely."—Gillian Tett, FINANCIAL TIMES (London)"Remarkable."—Giles Fraser, BBC RADIO 4"Terrific... In the best anthropological tradition, he helps us reset our everyday ideas by exploring history and other civilizations, then boomeranging back to render our own world strange, and more open to change."—Raj Patel, THE GLOBE AND MAIL"An amazing debut – conversational, pugnacious, propulsive"—TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION (UK)"Graeber's book has forced me to completely reevaluate my position on human economics, its history, and its branches of thought. A Marxism without Graeber's anthropology is beginning to feel meaningless to me."—Charles Mudede, THE STRANGER"The world of borrowing needs a little demystification, and David Graeber's Debt is a good start."—THE L MAGAZINE"Controversial and thought-provoking, an excellent book."—BOOKLIST"This timely and accessible book would appeal to any reader interested in the past and present culture surrounding debt, as well as broad-minded economists."—LIBRARY JOURNALPraise for David Graeber“I consider him the best anthropological theorist of his generation from anywhere in the world.”—Maurice Bloch, Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics "A brilliant, deeply original political thinker."—Rebecca Solnit, author of A Paradise Built in Hell“If anthropology consists of making the apparently wild thought of others logically compelling in their own cultural settings and intellectually revealing of the human condition, then David Graeber is the consummate anthropologist. Not only does he accomplish this profound feat, he redoubles it by the critical task—now more urgent than ever—of making the possibilities of other people’s worlds the basis for understanding our own.” —Marshall Sahlins, Charles F. Grey Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago David Graeber teaches anthropology at the London School of Economics. He has written for Harper’s, The Nation, Mute, and The New Left Review. In 2006, he delivered the Malinowski Memorial Lecture at the London School of Economics, an annual talk that honors “outstanding anthropologists who have fundamentally shaped the study of culture.” One of the original organizers of Occupy Wall Street, Graeber has been called an “anti-leader of the movement” by Bloomberg Businessweek. The Atlantic wrote that he “has come to represent the Occupy Wall Street message...expressing the group’s theory, and its founding principles, in a way that truly elucidated some of the things people have questioned about it.”

Now in paperback, the updated and expanded edition : David Graeber’s “fresh . . . fascinating . . . thought-provoking . . . and exceedingly timely” (Financial Times) history of debt

Here anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: he shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods—that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Graeber shows that arguments about debt and debt forgiveness have been at the center of political debates from Italy to China, as well as sparking innumerable insurrections. He also brilliantly demonstrates that the language of the ancient works of law and religion (words like “guilt,” “sin,” and “redemption”) derive in large part from ancient debates about debt, and shape even our most basic ideas of right and wrong. We are still fighting these battles today without knowing it.

Disappointing, weak, do not waste money and time on I was really disappointed in this book. It came recommended from a friend and I was hoping for some new ideas or insights around money and economics. It really is just a nonsensical ramble of which I was not able to eke out much. This review is the least I can do to warn others to not repeat my money and time waste. The author spends a lot of time at the beginning critiquing the "myth" of barter (that two paragraph parable at the beginning of 8th grade economics manuals - of how people would try to barter and thus discover it would be easier to use money). He builds this two paragraph parable into a huge straw-man, calling it the "founding myth of economics" which he proceeds to attack. That's his attempt to take down the discipline of economics (pls. note I am not calling it a science). That's like taking down anatomy because the anatomy drawings in the 6th grade manual are not accurate. The barter parable is meant to illustrate that any transactions (barter, credit, taxes etc) are nearly impossible without a universal unit of measure for value exchanged. Which is money. The parable uses the example of barter for a transaction because it is much easier for 8th graders to imagine that rather than more complicated transactions such as credit and taxes. He argues that anthropologists found no societies without money in which significant volumes of barter exists. Of course they did not. Without money it is impossible to keep track of the price of everything against everything. Which is the point the barter parable is trying to make in a simplistic way.Next the author argues that money is tied to credit transactions (including taxes) and that credit and money are really like the chicken and the egg. Of course they are. Credit transactions are exchanges of value with a time lag. Without a way to quantify the value exchanged they are nearly impossible to make (just like barter). And of course money is not coins. Coins are just symbols for money just like bank notes. The radical idea found by the author is that exchanges of value (trading goods, trading value in time as in credit, paying taxes) are impossible without a way to measure that value. Which btw. is exactly what the economists' parable of barter is trying to say too.All of this is peppered with random anthropological accounts, quotes from Nietzsche, quotes from some french economists about our primordial debt to gods, cries that our lives have become a "series of commercial transactions", and nonsensical expressions such as "bourgeois assumptions" (really? bourgeois?).The intent is to argue that money was involved in almost everything bad people did to each other through history and therefore there's something mysterious and bad about money (debt = money = slavery = capitalism = bad, or something like that). But wooden sticks, metals, clothes, and pretty much everything else including language were also involved in pretty much everything bad some people did to some other. So why single out money? Because it is an abstract concept, and abstract and invisible things draw weak minds like candles draw moths.Ever wonder why loonies come up with perpetual motion machines involving electricity and magnetism a lot more often than involving mechanics or thermodynamics? For the same reason - electricity and magnetism, just like money, are invisible and mysterious. Easier to make up fantasies about.
