Title: Shadowplay Pdf Behind the Lines and Under Fire

A gripping eyewitness account of a major 20th-century military conflict by the UK's most popular writer on geopolitics.

The shattering of Yugoslavia in the 1990s showed that, after nearly 50 years of peace, war could return to Europe. It came to its bloody conclusion in Kosovo in 1999.

Tim Marshall, then diplomatic editor at Sky News, was on the ground covering the Kosovo War. This is his illuminating account of how events unfolded, a thrilling journalistic memoir drawing on personal experience, eyewitness accounts, and interviews with intelligence officials from five countries.

Twenty years on from the war's end, with the rise of Russian power, a weakened NATO and stalled EU expansion, this story is more relevant than ever, as questions remain about the possibility of conflict on European soil. Utterly gripping, this is Tim Marshall at his very best: behind the lines, under fire, and full of the insight that has made him one of Britain's foremost writers on geopolitics.

Very good If there is anyone interested in the history of Milosevic Serbia - buy this book. And it is so easy in kindle edition.

Title: The Magnolia Inn Pdf

New York Times bestselling author Carolyn Brown brings together two wounded hearts in a Texas romance of second chances and twice-in-a-lifetime true love.

Inheriting the Magnolia Inn, a Victorian home nestled in the East Texas pines, is a fantasy come true for Jolene Broussard. After living with the guilt of failing to rescue her self-destructive mother, Jolene knows her aunt and uncle’s B&B is the perfect jump start for a new life and a comforting place to call home. There’s just one hitch: stubborn and moody carpenter Tucker Malone. He’s got a half interest in the Magnolia Inn, and he’s planting his dusty cowboy boots squarely in the middle of her dream.

Ever since his wife’s death, Tucker’s own guilt and demons have left him as guarded as Jolene. The last thing he expects is for his new partner to stir something inside him he thought was gone forever. And as wary as Jolene is, she may have found a kindred spirit—someone she can help, and someone she can hold on to.

Restoring the Magnolia Inn is the first step toward restoring their hearts. Will they be able to let go of the past and trust each other to do it together?

If Carolyn Brown writes it you will like it! Another great book by Carolyn Brown. I always enjoy her characters. They are so much fun , feisty and even shocking! Barb GulledgeWell.... I love Carolyn Brown but this book seems like several other of her books.I live in East Texas ,and people are really not so much down home, andHick sounding. I will re-read some of her other books and save my money.Disappointed While Carolyn Brown is one of my favorite authors, this book really disappointed me. The two main characters were "flat and one dimensional." I felt no chemistry between them. When I compare one of her books like "Cowboy boots for Christmas" to this one, its like it was written by another author. It was a boring book.

Why Trust Science? (University Center for Human Values Series) Download

ISBN: 069117900X
Title: Why Trust Science? (University Center for Human Values Series) Pdf
Author: Naomi Oreskes
Published Date: 2019-10-22
Page: 376

"Oreskes joins a distinguished line of thinkers who explain why we should trust the findings of the scientific community . . . [and] clearly reminds readers that science has consistently brought home the bacon." (Kirkus Reviews)"Why Trust Science? is an optimistic analysis of the opportunities that exist for enhancing public trust in science. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone who is part of the scientific endeavor."---Elisabeth Gilmore, Science "This book poses an important and timely question. While acknowledging the ways that science can go off track and become unreliable, Oreskes provides a compelling and well-supported defense of science, arguing that its trustworthiness derives from its collective character rather than a particular method or the inherent objectivity of scientists."―Angela N. H. Creager, author of Life Atomic: A History of Radioisotopes in Science and Medicine"Why Trust Science? is a timely book by one of the world's most important and trenchant observers of science and society. With misinformation and disinformation rampant today, caring citizens do not know what or whom to trust and have become confused about evidence, opinion, and partisan assertion. We need Oreskes's clear look at how to recognize and use reliable knowledge. I cannot overstate the importance of this book now to scientists and citizens."―Rush D. Holt, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, former US House member"Naomi Oreskes's Why Trust Science? should be read by progressives, conservatives, and everyone in between. It's an important, timely, and utterly compelling book."―Elizabeth Kolbert, author of The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History"How do we get to the truth? How do we safeguard scientific knowledge (and ourselves) from those whose interests are threatened by it? With her trailblazing work on climate denial and much else, Naomi Oreskes offers essential perspective on these questions. She tackles them head-on in this clear, utterly compelling book."―Naomi Klein, author of No Is Not Enough and This Changes Everything "Naomi Oreskes, who grabbed our attention with her keen insights into climate denial, now tackles a threat to the very basis of an informed democracy―attacks on science itself. Captivating, forceful, and grounded in critical analysis, Why Trust Science? is for anyone who cares about our world."―Jane Lubchenco, former head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration"An insightful, lucid, and accessible discussion of a highly complex issue of great urgency and importance. Oreskes's call for a socially engaged science might lead to substantial changes in our conception of the role of science in society and the ways in which science is organized institutionally."―Karim Bschir, ETH Zürich"This is a troubled time in the history of science and a perilous one for its reputation with the public, which is why now is exactly the right time for the fearless and brilliant Naomi Oreskes to explore this issue. The result is a don't-miss investigation into the very human nature of research―its successes, its failures, and its fundamental integrity in the search for truth."―Deborah Blum, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Poison Squad"Anybody who wants to understand the conceptual and practical underpinnings of credibility in scientific findings should read this book."―John P. Holdren, Harvard University, former science and technology adviser to President Barack Obama"In an age of fake news, alternative facts, and the notion that opinion and ideology trump empirical evidence and the scientific method, how should science respond? The title of this incredibly important book poses one of the most urgent questions of our time, because if we don't trust science then humanity is doomed."―Jim Al-Khalili, FRS, physicist, author, and host of BBC's The Life Scientific"This comprehensive and thoughtful book explores the thorny questions we often take for granted regarding why, when, and how we can―or can't―trust science. In a post-truth world, this is the book we need."―Katharine Hayhoe, Texas Tech University, coauthor of A Climate for Change"In this authoritative defense of science, noted scientist and science historian Naomi Oreskes presents her case, subjects it to scrutiny by experts, and responds to the points raised. Her approach itself is a metaphor for the self-correcting machinery of science and the iterative process that leads science toward a better understanding of the natural world."―Michael E. Mann, Penn State University, author of The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars

Why the social character of scientific knowledge makes it trustworthy

Do doctors really know what they are talking about when they tell us vaccines are safe? Should we take climate experts at their word when they warn us about the perils of global warming? Why should we trust science when our own politicians don't? In this landmark book, Naomi Oreskes offers a bold and compelling defense of science, revealing why the social character of scientific knowledge is its greatest strength―and the greatest reason we can trust it.

Tracing the history and philosophy of science from the late nineteenth century to today, Oreskes explains that, contrary to popular belief, there is no single scientific method. Rather, the trustworthiness of scientific claims derives from the social process by which they are rigorously vetted. This process is not perfect―nothing ever is when humans are involved―but she draws vital lessons from cases where scientists got it wrong. Oreskes shows how consensus is a crucial indicator of when a scientific matter has been settled, and when the knowledge produced is likely to be trustworthy.

Based on the Tanner Lectures on Human Values at Princeton University, this timely and provocative book features critical responses by climate experts Ottmar Edenhofer and Martin Kowarsch, political scientist Jon Krosnick, philosopher of science Marc Lange, and science historian Susan Lindee, as well as a foreword by political theorist Stephen Macedo.

Fascinating read with at least one flawed citation Professor Oreskes does an outstanding job of detailing the history of the scientific method over the last couple of centuries. She makes an excellent argument that even when scientists are wrong, it is usually due to a lack of a true consensus or biases on part of individual scientists who end up getting much more publicity than they should. Usually because their bias is shared with many in the general public. The examples given were spot on, and I learned a lot of history from them. Especially the section on eugenics.I only found one flaw, and this could just be me nit picking. Towards the beginning Professor Oreskes references acupuncture and TCM as examples of non-Western medicine found to be effective. Her citation for this involved research from Dr. Edzard Ernst, but his paper (which he confirmed with me when I messaged him) never said any such thing.I get her point, that over time non-scientists may find effective solutions and these shouldn't be ignored. Perhaps a better example was variolation practiced in early China and Sudan.Taking arguments from her critics, even giving them a voice, was an excellent way to show she is open to hearing other points of view.

White House Confidential Pdf

ISBN: B01HX2W2SK
Title: White House Confidential Pdf The Little Book of Weird Presidential History
An irreverent look at Presidential foibles, follies, fibs, and moral failures

Were past presidents smarter, more honest, and better behaved that those we elect today? Don’t bet on it! White House Confidential shows that commanders-in-chief have been lying, cheating, stealing, and womanizing from the days of the Founding Fathers. Focusing on the qualities that never made it into White House press releases, the authors look at their sexual misdeeds and strange family relationships, scandals that engulfed administrations, fights with enemies, and questionable money matters. Dip into these pages to find out:

Which president was famous for being the richest man alive because of all his brilliant real estate deals?
Which president was born in Canada, and was ineligible to hold the office of president?
Which president caused some problems by trying to grow “strange herbs” in the White House garden?
Which president often ordered White House staff to rub Vaseline into his scalp while he ate breakfast in bed?
Which president often called his deputy chief of staff “Turd Blossom”?

Updated with new material about many presidents including George W. Bush and Barack Obama, White House Confidential will have you laughing (and sometimes cursing!) as you take a second look at the next occupant of the Oval Office.

Barely amusing The premise of the book regarded being entertaining. While there were obvious efforts to entertain through type face and paragraph margin changes there was little to recommend. Can't really say why I read the whole thing. Guess I thought it would get better. It's disjointed chronological presentation of quotes and barbs keptw from getting a wholistic perspective. The bombardment of quips did make me notice that recent times are not so unique. Perhaps that was the point.Must Read I haven't found a book so interesting and fascinating as this one in a long time. For those of you that think our political world right now is the worst ever - you really need to read this book. The author has researched little known facts about Presidents from ... The author has researched little known facts about Presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama. You will read about strange habits and many other details about many Presidents that have not been told before.

ISBN: B01N9HDV49
Title: Ali Pdf A Life
Winner of the 2018 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing
Winner of The Times Sports Biography of the Year

“As Muhammad Ali’s life was an epic of a life so Ali: A Life is an epic of a biography . . . pages in succession its narrative reads like a novel—a suspenseful novel with a cast of vivid characters.” – Joyce Carol Oates, New York Times Book Review

Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Clay in racially segregated Louisville, Kentucky, the son of a sign painter and a housekeeper. He went on to become a heavyweight boxer with a dazzling mix of power and speed, a warrior for racial pride, a comedian, a preacher, a poet, a draft resister, an actor, and a lover. Millions hated him when he changed his religion, changed his name, and refused to fight in the Vietnam War. He fought his way back, winning hearts, but at great cost.
Jonathan Eig, hailed by Ken Burns as one of America’s master storytellers, sheds important new light on Ali’s politics, religion, personal life, and neurological condition through unprecedented access to all the key people in Ali’s life, more than 500 interviews and thousands of pages of previously unreleased FBI and Justice Department files and audiotaped interviews from the 1960s. Ali: A Life is a story about America, about race, about a brutal sport, and about a courageous man who shook up the world.

A beautifully written book about a complex multifaceted champion. The sweet science of boxing can be a vicious, primal and yet beautiful dance between two people in a boxing ring. Muhammad Ali was a man who embodied this paradox in many ways. The author captures this in a biography that illustrates Ali's humanity and great gifts. Muhammad Ali fought in the boxing ring and for his beliefs in a manner that will maintain his name in the public mind. This is a brilliantly written biography that brings The Greatest, as Ali called himself, to life as a man of conviction, naivety, poetry, compassion and yet, at times, lacking in empathy. The author successfully demonstrated how Muhammad Ali was a man who emerged at a time in American history that was a perfect setting for him. Ali was an embodiment of the conflicts that shook this country. The book depicts him in an honest fashion that leaves the reader recognizing why this man will remain a true champion, in a multiplicity of ways. May he rest in peace.I highly recommend this book.A deep dive into Ali's colorful, incredible life In the early 90s I read Thomas Hauser's Ali biography, which really transformed my opinion of Ali. When I saw this book in the store, I couldn't walk past it now that Ali has passed on. Eig's biography was even better than Hauser's earlier treatment. Of course he was working with the whole story, but the way that Eig carries us through Ali's life really appealed to me. Of course, there were the stories around each of his fights. But Eig didn't dwell there. He provided just enough detail for a lover of the sport like myself, but didn't get buried in Ali's lower profile fights. Eig's narrative brings us into Ali's life - yes, his life was more than just a boxer, draft resistor/war protester, and celebrity. That's what really appealed here. I felt, after reading the book, that I was given the full measure of the man. The Greatest? Of course he was one of them. Eig puts the arc of Ali's boxing career in very good perspective. Flawed? Certainly, but aren't we all, some like Ali, with some larger flaws than others. But human and someone who really worked in the later years of his life to make right in many ways. All in all, this was one of the better sports bios I've read, particularly because it wasn't just a repetition of the pre- and post-fight details, and nothing more. It was a deep dive into Ali's colorful, incredible life.Eig adds depth and color to Ali's story As the most recognized and most written about athlete in the world, Muhammad Ali's story is well-known--from his days as a flashy, loud-mouthed, self-promoting Olympian, his two unexpected wins over Sonny Liston, his refusal to report for the draft, being stripped of his title and his brutal fights against Joe Frasier.Author Jonathan Eig covers all the familiar ground, but he adds special focus to Ali's involvement with the Nation of Islam, his marital relationships, financial problems and his decline in the ring.Eig writes that Ali's willingness to take too many punches, often the result of his rope-a-dope strategy, declining skills and poor work habits, resulted in brain damage. Dr. Ferdie Pacheco says Ali started to show signs of brain damage after his first fight with Joe Frasier. One of Eig's major contributions is that he requested CompuBox, Inc., researchers to watch every one of Ali's recorded fights and count the punches. As a result, Eig knows how many times Ali was hit over his career and how many times he hit his opponents. The punishment Ali took is devastating and manifested itself in his speech and actions.Sadly, Ali never knew when to stop. He kept pushing for one more payday, even though his heart wasn't in it. He understood little about his finances and was exploited by promoter Don King and Herbert Muhammad of the Nation of Islam. As an example, King cheated Ali out of $1.2 million for one fight, but Ali chose to accept a suitcase full of cash ($50,000) rather than sue King for what he was owed. To compound matters, Ali agreed to sign with King for another fight.Ali's last hurrah against the much younger, stronger and skilled Larry Holmes was pathetic and dangerous. It was a sad spectacle. Holmes earned a TKO in 11 rounds. Ali's last fight was a 10-round loss to Trevor Berbick in December 1981.When Ali died on June 3, 2016, he was remembered as more than an athlete. He was remembered as a man of courage and principle.Eig writes that "Race was the theme of Ali's life. He insisted that America come to grips with a black man who wasn't afraid to speak out, who refused to be what others expected him to be. He didn't overcome race. He didn't overcome racism. He called it out. He faced it down. He refuted it. He insisted that racism shaped our notions of race, that it was never the other way around."After I finished Eig's book I spent several evenings watching Ali's fights on YouTube, and I suspect other readers will, too.Eig, a masterful writer, does a great job adding depth and color to Ali's story. He conducted more than 600 interviews with 200 people for the book.

Minecrafters delight!! When I purchase items for my grandchildren, I always try to include something to keep their minds busy. Since my grandson is into Mindcraft I thought this would be the perfect little something for him. I was disappointed and he was delighted.Excellent, activities require real thinking! This is a quality product, because many of the activities actually require real thinking to figure out, such as some math related problems that require more than a simple add or subtract; you have to use deductive reasoning to get the answer. The activities are all very centered around the minecraft series, so the child would need to be familiar with the series to do the activities. Would highly recommend this for minecraft lovers who can use some real thinking and fun activities!Perfect for minecrafters My little one is obsessed with Minecraft so anything that has to do with it she’s all for. This helps to get her practicing on her print because to her she’s doing Minecraft work. The illustrations are nice.. the paper a nice texture.
