Title: Out of Africa Pdf

Danish countess Karen Blixon, known as Isak Dineson, ran a coffee plantation in Kenya in the years when Africa remained a romantic and formidable continent to most Europeans. Out of Africa is her account of her life there, with stories of her respectful relationships with the Masai, Kikuyu, and Somali natives who work on her land; the European friends who visit her; and the imposing permanence of the wild, high land itself. Stage and television actress Julie Harris delivers a reading that is emotionally charged and reflective, recreating Dinesen's lively appreciation for the land she loved so much.

The Female Hemingway Here is an unexpected entry for the feminism reading list. Unlike Meryl Streep’s rather silly character in the movie, Baroness Blixen is a remarkably capable woman. She manages a 600 acre coffee farm, runs transport for the war, works with civil authorities and tribal leaders, and helps her neighbors the Masai by shooting the occasional lion.Blixen’s writing is realistic because it’s autobiographical, and a realist writer in Africa naturally invites comparison with her contemporary, Ernest Hemingway. She is not a professional, though, with Hemingway’s carefully pared paragraphs. Her descriptions are beautiful, as well as precise. If you’re looking at the book on Amazon, you can see what I mean from the first few pages.Out of Africa is a heartfelt memoir, a collection of vignettes. So, not great art but still worth a read just for the author’s style and sensibility. Not a Perfect Book But a Must Read OUT OF AFRICA,(1937). This classic nonfiction by Isak Dinesen, about her years on a farm in Africa is an eternal, much loved, worldwide bestseller; has been selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of all time. Its opening line, “I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills,” is one of the most famous, most quoted in all literature. The memoir, which was written nearly 100 years ago with great unsentimental clarity and intelligence, portrays a way of life that has since disappeared. The book has been made into an Oscar-winning, much loved, eternally, worldwide bestselling film of the same name.In 1914, shortly before the outbreak of World War I, the Danish Baroness Karen Blixen arrived in Kenya, East Africa, with Baron Bror Blixen, her Swedish husband, to run a coffee farm. She was instantly drawn to the land, and the Continent; spent her happiest years there until the plantation, which was located at too high an altitude for coffee growing, failed. Blixen was forced to return to Denmark in 1931; it was there that she wrote this classic account of her experiences under her Dinesen pen name. A poignant farewell to her beloved farm, OUT OF AFRICA describes her strong friendships with the people of her area, her affection for the landscape and animals, her great love for the adventurer Denys Finch-Hatton.In this book, the author of SEVEN GOTHIC TALES and the short story BABETTE’S FEAST, which was also made into an Oscar-winning film, gives a true account of life on her plantation in Kenya. She tells, with forthright simplicity of the ways of the country and its natives: of the beauty of the Ngong Hills and coffee trees in blossom; of her guests, from the Prince of Wales to Knudsen, the old charcoal burner, who visited her; of local native festivals. Of big game that were her near neighbors--lions, rhinos, elephants, zebras, buffaloes--and Lulu, the little gazelle who came to live with her, who was charmingly ladylike and beautiful. There is no question but that Dinesen’s first chapter, in which she introduces herself to Africa and Africa to the world, is extremely powerful, as is her last, in which she describes her burial of her lover Finch-Hatton, and her forced departure from the land she loved. In between, however, things can get a bit poky. There is also no question but that this book, written so long ago, reflects realities of the time which some of us hope are no longer so. I have recently visited the Blixen house, and it is full of animal skins, including items which I particularly hate, those rugs with the animals’ heads still on. The writer mentions killing an animal for its pretty coat: I, and many others, I hope, believe that an animal needs her pretty coat more than any person does. The author also describes a paternalistic, maternalistic outlook on the natives; yet a native servant is beaten to death for the sin of having ridden, rather than walked, a horse home. This kind of behavior undoubtedly helped cause the bloodthirsty largely Kikuyu-dominated 1952-1960 Mau Mau insurrection in Kenya, which was aimed at white settlers and farmers, ended only with the designation of Kenya as a member of the British Commonwealth, not as a colony. But, of course, the past is past, and cannot be changed.Ah, and the writer also says, “On the Western wall of my house there was a stone seat and in front of it a table made out of a mill-stone. This stone had a tragic history: it was the upper millstone of the mill of the two murdered Indians. After the murder nobody dared to take over the mill, it was empty and silent for a long time, and I had the stone brought up to my house to form a table top, to remind me of Denmark. The Indian millers had told me that their mill-stone had come over the Sea from Bombay, as the stones of Africa are not hard enough for the work of grinding. On the top side a pattern was carved, and it had a few large brown spots on it, which my houseboys held to be the blood of the Indians, that would never come off. The millstone table in a way constituted the centre of the farm, for I used to sit behind it in all my dealings with the Natives. From the stone seat behind the mill-stone, I and Denys Finch- Hatton had one New Year seen the new moon and the planets of Venus and Jupiter all close together, in a group on the sky; it was such a radiant sight that you could hardly believe it to be real….”On my recent trip to Kenya, I got to sit on the stone seat behind the millstone table: see the attached picture. A very proud moment for me. This is not a perfect book, but it’s a must read.Shadows of the Past A trip to Kenya is incomplete without reading this book. Her descriptions are honest and delightful and give so much insight into the character of the land I would be lost without it. Her observations on the Kikuyu people hold as true today as they did then. The only way to really understand the Somali people is to read what they were like before colonization and see how little they have changed. Africa of old is the Africa of late, only with different clothes and better technology. That which was enchanting about them still enchants, that which was terrifying or pathetic remains the same. I have walked her estates and sat where she sat. I have driven through the Kikuyu lands she begged and bartered with the government to give to her once loyal workers. The town bustles and prospers, all because of her behind the scenes successful negotiations. I have lived with the Somali and can attest to their loyalty as individuals well as their fierceness when aroused in a group. She predicted her book might become a historical document someday, and I assure you it is. Looking over the valley of Nairobi from the Ngong Hills is a thrilling experience and a sad one at the same time. Sad that a woman who planned to die and be buried in Africa was taken from the home she loved and thrust back to where she hailed. We are the benefactors of her exile. Her book stands as monument to her own charity and a looking glass into a time forgotten.

‘The most complete guide: with all the detail you'll need for a walk in Wainwright's footsteps.' (The Sunday Times)

Fully revised 8th edition of this classic 191-mile walk across northern England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, inspired by Alfred Wainwright.

Crossing three fabulous national parks – the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors – it samples the very best of the English countryside – rugged mountains and lakes, gentle dales and stone-built villages; wild moorland; sea cliffs and fishing villages.

• 10 town plans and 109 large-scale walking maps – at just under 1:20,000 – showing route times, places to stay, places to eat, points of interest and much more. These are not general-purpose maps but fully-edited maps drawn by walkers for walkers.

• Itineraries for all walkers – whether walking the route in its entirety over two weeks or sampling the highlights on day walks and short breaks

• Practical information for all budgets – camping, bunkhouses, hostels, B&Bs, pubs and hotels; St Bees through to Robin Hood's Bay – where to stay, where to eat, what to see, plus detailed street plans

• Comprehensive public transport information – for all access points on the Coast to Coast Path

• Flora and fauna – four page full color flower guide, plus an illustrated section on local wildlife

• Green hiking – understanding the local environment and minimizing our impact on it

• GPS waypoints. These are also downloadable from the Trailblazer website

• Plus extra colour sections: 16pp colour introduction and 16pp of colour mapping for stage sections (one stage per page) with trail profiles.

Hands down best guidebooks EVER!!! I have been a devoted user of Trailblazer trail guides for several years now. I have used them to successfully complete the England Coast to Coast hike, England's full South West Coast Path (in one go, which took 3 of their guidebooks), the Tour du Mont Blanc, and the Trek to Everest Base Camp.I am always evangelizing the series and every hiker I show the guides to marvels at the far superiority of the mapping and information inside, so hopefully I have gotten a few to switch over from the woefully underwhelming Cicerone series. The absolute comprehensive coverage of Trailblazer guides has officially spoiled me from ever being able to use another source!I am so thankful for the brilliant work their group does to keep hikers like me on the right track and giving me the confidence to take on any trail through any terrain anywhere in the world.

Outstanding Debut Novel from an Author to Watch

Kaine Prescott is no stranger to death. When her husband died two years ago, her pleas for further investigation into his suspicious death fell on deaf ears. In desperate need of a fresh start, Kaine purchases an old house sight unseen in her grandfather's Wisconsin hometown. But one look at the eerie, abandoned house immediately leaves her questioning her rash decision. And when the house's dark history comes back with a vengeance, Kaine is forced to face the terrifying realization she has nowhere left to hide.

A century earlier, the house on Foster Hill holds nothing but painful memories for Ivy Thorpe. When an unidentified woman is found dead on the property, Ivy is compelled to discover her identity. Ivy's search leads her into dangerous waters and, even as she works together with a man from her past, can she unravel the mystery before any other lives--including her own--are lost?

Realistic mystery. Well done! This is not my typical genre because it's usually too unrealistic, so when I decided to try this book, I wasn't expecting much. However, I was very pleasantly surprised! Not only did the characters seem real but the mystery itself was woven into the story seamlessly. The dual timeline added a nice twist and was quite interesting. Although there was romance in the book, it was secondary, which I prefer. It's amazing that this is the author's debut novel because it was excellent. Extremely captivating with just the right amount of suspense to keep me turning the pages as fast as possible.I enjoyed this book so much. If other authors would follow suit in writing a realistic mystery/suspense novel, I may give romantic suspense another try. Very well done, Jaime Jo Wright. You nailed it! I look forward to reading more by this author.Downright Chilling! Excellent debut novel by Jamie Jo Wright. I don't usually read dual time novels, but the cover of this book just drew me in. The book is every bit as chilling as the cover. It contains all the elements necessary for a great suspense novel - unexplained occurrences, suspicious characters, as well as the spooky old house. Wright balances these with a touch of romance for the two women who find themselves gripped by the mystery of Foster Hill House in two different times. She connects the stories beautifully. I can't wait to read more from this author.Gripping suspense...exceptional debut! In her debut novel, Author Jaime Jo Wright has delivered a compelling tale of murder and mystery through a time split story-line connected by an old abandoned house, the lives it touched, and the long protected secrets it holds. Gripping suspense, multiple plot twists, hair raising terror, and well developed characters travel across the pages and I found myself riveted by Kaine Prescott's and Ivy Thorpe's lives as they converged at The House on Foster Hill. Wright has woven a dual story so intricately entwined it took me to the end of the book to unravel and reveal the truth. And, it was a surprise...not what I was expecting at all. The seamless transition from one era to the other kept the smooth rhythm of the story flowing and held me captive with each turn of the page to the very end.Though the story in both eras has a dark  and ominous feel to it, it also offers light and life. Intertwined with the frightening evil that overshadows the house, a legacy of hope rises and shines through the strong women who refuse to let the house's secret ruin their lives or force them to live in fear; women who look to an eternal future. Wright does an exceptional job weaving faith into everyday moments in a natural, unforced way...as it should be. Talk of God's love and His promises written in scripture were flawlessly laid within casual conversation and deep reflections by the characters. Wright has crafted a well written debut and is an author to watch in the coming years. I look forward to more from her.

Houseplants are more popular than ever before—especially with millennials, who are setting up their homes for the first time and discovering that nothing can add energy, style, and that essential “lived-in-ness” to their spaces better than a little bit of green. Whether it’s a statement-making fiddle-leaf fig or a tiny tabletop succulent, a houseplant instantly elevates the look of your home. But where to begin?

In Decorating with Plants, Baylor Chapman walks readers through everything they need to know to bring houseplants into their home. First, there’s Plant Care 101: from how to assess light conditions to tricks for keeping your plants alive while on vacation, Chapman gives readers the simple, foundational info they need to ensure their plants will thrive. Then she introduces us to 28 of her favorites—specimens that are tough as nails but oh-so-stylish, from the eye-catching Rubber Tree to the delicate Cape Primrose. Finally, she guides readers through the home room by room: Place an aromatic plant like jasmine or gardenia to your entry to establish your home’s “signature scent.” Add a proper sense of scale to your living room with a ceiling-grazing palm. Create a living centerpiece of jewel-toned succulents for a dining table arrangement that will last long after your dinner party. From air purification to pest control, there’s no limit to what houseplants can do for your home—and Decorating with Plants is here to show you how to add them to spaces big and small with style.

Nine Perfect Strangers Free Pdf

ISBN: B07DF63TGH
Title: Nine Perfect Strangers Pdf

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of Big Little Lies

Could 10 days at a health resort really change you forever? In Liane Moriarty's latest audiobook, nine perfect strangers are about to find out....

Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can't even admit to themselves. Amid all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these 10 days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next 10 days are going to be.

Frances Welty, the formerly best-selling romantic novelist, arrives at Tranquillum House nursing a bad back, a broken heart, and an exquisitely painful paper cut. She's immediately intrigued by her fellow guests. Most of them don't look to be in need of a health resort at all. But the person who intrigues her most is the strange and charismatic owner/director of Tranquillum House.

Could this person really have the answers Frances didn't even know she was seeking? Should Frances put aside her doubts and immerse herself in everything Tranquillum House has to offer - or should she run while she still can?

It's not long before every guest at Tranquillum House is asking exactly the same question.

Combining all of the hallmarks that have made her audiobooks a go-to for any listener looking for wickedly smart, unpausable fiction that will make you laugh and gasp, Liane Moriarty's Nine Perfect Strangers once again shows why she is a master of her craft.

Not her best book Not Liane’s best work. I found the concept mildly interesting but too many characters to follow and too much inner dialogue for me. I was ready to give up about half way through, so much emphasis on weight. I got a few laughs but as a whole found the book clunky to read, rather than a page turner like many of this author’s other books. What a disappointment NINE PERFECT STRANGERS is two books in one: the first, filled with eccentric characters, wry humor and promise for intrigue; the second, utter tedium. What a grand idea for a plot, I thought, as I was introduced to nine people about to embark on inside-and-out makeovers at a stunningly beautiful house in Australia. Frances, the washed up romance novelist; Jessica and Ben, in their new Lamborghini; Lars, the drop dead gorgeous divorce lawyer; Tony, the retired Aussie footballer; Carmel, the weight-obsessed mother; and the Marconis, a seemingly ordinary family of three: all, for reasons of their own, signed up for a ten day stay at Tranquillum House.Sheer heaven, the strangers anticipate, until they learn the strict rules they must obey during their stay. No electronics; no talking; no alcohol and almost no food, Masha, the owner, makes clear. Is this a health spa or psychological warfare, the guests wonder, as they are stripped of all contraband. As the strangers interact during their first couple days, Lianne Moriarty has me smirking. She confirms my pathological fear of whole-body wellness spas. Why anyone would pay a small fortune for ten days of misery has always intrigued me, and I discover that many of the Tranquillum House guests are asking the same questions. Their stories emerge, often through internal dialogue, and it is no surprise to me that each character is in crisis of some degree. And then things get weird, as the saying goes; I could hardly wait to find out what happens next (and next). The tension continues to build, and - boom - the suspense drops like a heavy weight in what I call Book Two. I quickly became bored by the characters and the outlandish plot. Frances in particular gets on my last nerve as she whines with each retelling of her past. I DON’T CARE became my internal dialogue. Determined to reach the denouement, I used my ancient Evelyn Wood speed reading expertise to skim through 200 pages. This book has such great potential for an entertaining read. Until Book Two, I loved the characters and their siege-like situation. The dark humor had me laughing, and my fear and loathing of wellness centers was vindicated. Lianne Moriarty seemed to have lost her way somewhere in the middle of her story. At certain points, I thought there were too many characters; in others, I wanted new ones to stimulate my interest. Lianne Moriarty can do much better.Relatable characters in an original setting - plenty of twists Nine guests come to stay at a health resort, each of them having reached a difficult point in life - recovering from divorce or bereavement or career downturn, and/ or simply dealing with the effects of ageing. The health resort is a blend of draconian strictness and blissfully therapeutic - hidden alcohol is confiscated from the guests' luggage, but if you're secretly feeling down about your age, you'll be magically whisked off for a rejuvenating facial. Yet the resort owner has a sinister secret agenda, and the guests must bond together to extricate themselves from some bizarre challenges. Every one of the guests uses this time at the resort to come to terms with the past, reassess their identity and find the strength to face the future. One of the great achievements of this book is the way Moriarty gradually introduces all the characters, so there is no confusion between them. No mean feat when you are dealing with nine guests, and at least 3 members of staff, all flung together. For some reason, this book reminded me of Agatha Christie, with the different characters bonding in an artificial environment. However, there is no real comparison, I'm just curious whether anyone else saw this as well!
